How to Write Like the Greats by Training Your Brain to Focus

This is how to create inspiring stories by learning to lower your level of daily stimulation.

With the growing, fast-paced environment that is the internet, writing in all its forms has begun to take on entirely new meanings. We spend less time working on thought-provoking, substantial pieces, and more time refreshing our subscription boxes, and Instagram feeds.

I noticed that my attention span was worsening the more time I spent away from writing, and I knew to salvage my creativity I was going to have to retrain my brain to focus.

My need for constant stimulation made every other aspect of my life apart from lightning-speed googling feel like a hassle. When it came to getting back to my freelance projects or the book I’m currently writing, I was always looking for the quickest way to get things done.

It was almost as if it was more important to cross the task off of my to-do list than to spend a little extra time producing quality work. I was stumped more often than not about how to start new pieces, and I noticed that they began to lack substance altogether.

So when it came to relearning how to focus for long periods, I first had to understand what I needed to change to make it worthwhile. I started cutting down the time I spent mindlessly scrolling through my social media feeds, and instead, I tried to reengage with my love for reading.

I didn’t even acknowledge that I had stopped reading altogether, and it was challenging to sit down for no more than fifteen minutes at a time to read a few pages.

That’s when I realized I had a problem, and I needed to take action fast.

It’s easy to imagine the vibrant imagination of a writer who spends countless hours typing away at their desks while sipping on their third coffee for the day. Though, for many of us — this is not realistic, nor is it always as productive as it may seem.
