I Feel Fine

GenX at the End of the World

Original Art by the Author

Today on my brief jaunt in my jalopy, I heard a song that transported me to my youth, as radio songs often do.

As I laughingly struggled to keep up with Michael Stipe’s fire-spitting delivery of the world’s end inventory, it was briefly 1987, a moment as unreal & bubble-sealed as any in a remembered movie.

Suddenly I was 14 & struggling to understand the lyrics — there was no internet to consult, & I was a hick child from Texas.

It was the first time I heard the name “Lenny Bruce,” though Leonard Bernstein was familiar.

Then I recalled an SNL sketch I saw years later. Molly Shannon as Courtney Love, proclaiming that “Michael Stipe says Kabbalah is jackass.”

Most of my knowledge of the world comes through pop culture — and I feel fine.
