You Were Learning When You Messed Up Your Life

I was travelling at 70mph down the motorway in an old car, coasting to save money. As I rounded the bend, traffic was stopped up ahead. I pushed the brake and nothing happened. The speedo stayed at…

The Foolery of Jewelry

POETRY

a silly poem for #NatPoWriMo, day 3

Look at all this foolery;
boxes and buckets
and hangers of jewelry.

When on earth
will I need all this mess?

I am no pirate or seeker of jewels
but I’ve collected enough of it
to adorn a dozen fools.

There are beads and baubles,
braids of chain and filigree wings,
gaudy rings and superfluous things.
Sweater pins and hat pins and scarf pins…
When is the last time I even wore a scarf?

There are pendants and strings
and feathery things,
silvers, bronzes and golds…
and, of course, that fancy rose-gold.

Earrings in balls and stars and dangles.
Oh, when on earth will I wear all these bangles?

But wait, this one belonged to my grandmother, and my mom gave me that, and my cousin and daughter and sons gave me those and there must be one from every single ex —

It seems all these things
have stories amongst the bling.
Even the ones that are now
tarnished and green.

So, I hang it and box it and even put some on display.
But, I better make room — no doubt, more’s on its way!

For National Poetry Month, the POMpoets are taking up a writing challenge of our own. We are calling it #NatPoWriMo, a kind of spin-off from the more well-known #NaPoWriMo. Today’s prompt is:

Write a SILLY poem

Oh, it felt good to be a little silly today. I had the vaccine a few days ago and it feels like all of the energy has been sapped from my body. While lounge in the bed today, working pretty hard on client orders, I needed a break for silly poetry.

Poetry to the rescue — again!

Thanks for readin’!
