What Pulls On The Strings Of The Heart

a poem in response to Wild and Wonderous Prompts: Write about extraordinary, mundane things that tug at your heart.

My cuddle buddy wakes me by landing
his four feet gently on my chest, kisses me
and lays on my chest good morning mom
the expression on his face says to me.
He’s the one who has had a hard life
before coming to us- and yet his puppy
heart has learned to re-trust humans.

My favorite view- morning and night
are sun rises and sets- it’s easy to overlook
them due to their routine nature.
Yet, if we’re willing to pay attention
they give us a beautiful show- never
the same premiere twice.

The relief I feel after a 10 to 15-minute
meditation practice- I once thought
that meditation only for certain types
of people and I didn’t check those boxes.
Now it’s a daily must-have: it grounds,
calms and keeps my anxious mind
focused daily.

My new morning practice of reaching for
my bullet journal to write a top three list
and any stray thoughts from the night
before starting my day instead of phone.
Technology dictates too much of life.
It’s time to take freedom back.

The way my husband looks at me
care and compassion in his eyes.
Someone I thought would never be
in my life- I spent years searching
After building myself, the gift arrived.

I try to live a simple life.
Minimalistic in nature.
The things that pull at the strings
of my heart are small,
yet they make all the difference.
