How Do You Measure Success?

“Failure is a stepping stone to success.”

This morning as I sat in meditation, I felt guided to write this short message. I will be the first to admit; I have been a perfectionist for most of my life. I worked the most hours to get the best results. I studied longer and asked the most questions. Why? Well, because I wanted to be the best at everything I did. And I understood that hard work leads to success. But today, I pondered; What does success look like, and how do you measure it? But to answer that question, you must also ask, what does failure look like?

I believe the term “success” has become convoluted. But it is simple; it is the baby steps towards a larger vision. Successes are the little victories toward your overall goal. It helps keep you motivated and inspired. But I have noticed that many of us are so fixated on the objective we forget to celebrate the small victories.

Let’s say you are new to Medium and currently have 100 followers. You set a goal to reach 1,000 new followers by the end of the year. You plan to do this by posting at least one blog daily and engaging with the community. Two months have passed, and you have become frustrated because you only have 300 followers. You are ready to throw in the towel because you feel unsuccessful and will not reach your overall goal.

The individual in the example is measuring success by numbers. They feel the 200 new followers mean failure because the focus is on the wrong thing. This person should do the following; be grateful and engage with the new followers, celebrate the small victory, and use this as an opportunity to make adjustments.

My loves, we must not be afraid of failing. Failures in this lifetime help us grow, evolve, and develop our crafts. Since I joined Medium (July 23rd), I have had plenty of ‘failures.’ Most of my blogs are under 100 views. Some blogs barely have 100 claps. So, I used that information to make changes.
