Noname Using Her Voice In Rap To Address Social Issues

By Valery Michael Analicia

To give a little in-depth background on the political climate during this time when J Cole released his song “Snow on Tha Bluff” , during July 2020 it was the month of the first ever blackout day. Blackout day was a social media event that was created in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. Black Out Day encourages people of all colors to not spend any money (primarily at big business like Amazon,Walmart, Target, etc) for a full day on a specific day in hopes that this financial dent in business would raise attention of the police brutality and racism Black people experience. People were also supporting this movement massively through social media. Many encouraged the posting of Black content creators and Black owned businesses. Blackout day began primarily because of the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Elijah MCCain. These victims of police brutality represent the bigger image of the police brutality and racism within America.

Yet a personal opinion is that J.Cole cannot afford to not be politically active in Black issues. As a rapper that heavily influences the Black community and is loved by so many, he should have taken the role of informing himself on Black issues. The only reason J.Cole does not show direct interest for these issues is that he managed to make it. He briefly talks about his experience with law enforcement in his song “Neighbors” . In this song, J-Cole talks about how his neighbors believe that he is a drug dealer just because he is a wealthy black successful man. Yet despite J Cole’s enforcement with law enforcement, he doesn’t face the struggles that the regular non-famous Black man endures. For the sake of staying true to his fans, I hope J Cole soon remembers and recognizes how severe this issue of racism against Black people is in America and educates himself before he decides to call out a young Black female activist rapper.

All in all, Noname is poetic and outspoken Chicago rapper who is not afraid to voice her thoughts and opinions on political and social issues, whether it be through her music or social media. She is very vocal in topics ranging from identity, race, sex, and politics. It is beyond amazing that she brings awareness to such topics in her community, but it is even better that she does it with a great flow, rhymes, and artistic touch.
