Is this the start of another Groundhog Year?

It feels like we‘ve done this before.

New Year’s Eve 2020

I give due respect to New Year’s Eve. Not for the parties or the celebrations, but for the symbolic possibilities of fresh starts. The air of hope.

We have been so very patient with ourselves, with our families, friends, colleagues and society. We have been extremely patient and trusting in our leaders. The people that hold our lives in their hands.

We know if we can all just do what we need to do, we will get through 2020.

Illness, death, fear. Masks, check-ins, restrictions.

We lock down and wait. It ends. That familiar feeling of normalcy and hope. Phew. Then Christmas and the fresh start of a New Year.

But then New Year’s eve 2021.

We have tried to remain patient with ourselves, with our families, friends and colleagues. Society has shown its ugly, ignorant side. Some days it’s hard to be patient.

We lose trust in our leaders. The people that hold our lives in their hands.

We think if everyone can just keep doing what we need to do, we will get through 2021. Just as we got through last year.

Illness, death, fear. Masks, check-ins, restrictions.

We lock down and wait. And wait. A feeling of frustration and boredom. Then it ends. Phew. Christmas arrives and the fresh start of a New Year.

Soon it will be 2022.

Can we maintain patience with ourselves, with our families, friends, colleagues and the worst of society? I believe we can.

Will it be possible to trust our leaders again? The people that hold our lives in their hands? Perhaps. Perhaps not.

The rational side of humanity will do what we need to do, and we will get through 2022. Just as we got through this year and the last.

Illness, variants, death, fear. Masks, check-ins, restrictions, boosters. What more?

We will lock down again and wait if we have to. Because we have to, but it takes fortitude, commitment and community.

It’s hard to imagine, but a feeling of normalcy and hope will return one day. And when Christmas comes around again, we’ll do what we always do. And the New Year will bring another fresh start.

It may feel like Groundhog Year but I wish you optimism and hope. Happy New Year.
