If in default on line of credit/second mortgage and no way to pay it off, is the only option to file for bankruptcy (in CA)? Would they garnish wages, go after me forever, put a lien on another house not associated with the 2nd that I also own unless I file BK? Would hate to have a BK would cost me my job.

I took out a loan with a short term loan company as I was meant to be starting a job, and needed to buy equipment for it and pay for various things. So I got the money and got everything I needed, planning to pay the loan back with the money I would be payed, only to get let down and told I couldn’t do the job. I had no other income what so ever at the time and wasn’t able to pay it back. Now it has been passed on to a debt collector, and I explained my situation on the phone and explained I would pay whatever I could whenever I could, but as I only get 100 every 2 weeks and am desperately looking for work I don’t have a lot spare after getting what I need to live on. The man on the phone said it wasn’t good enough and said I would be getting bailiffs sent out and could get taken to court and I explained there is nothing I can do, I literally don’t have the money, how can I give what I haven’t got? I know I am responisible for the loan and I would pay the money if I had it but what am I supposed to do? I didn’t know the job would let me down, it was just unfortunate circumstances. Hello. I’ve been trying for the past six months to buy a house. I was prequalified through FHA for a set amount. Now, supposedly guidelines for FHA are changing Jan. 1st. They are a lot more picky and now I prequal for 50,000 less. So FHA is no longer an option. I heard about secured credit cards strictly for rebuilding bad credit and I have bad credit. I have a bankruptcy on my record back in 2004 which stays on my report for 10 years. I recently submitted an online application to Bank of America (whom I bank with) for a secured credit card, and was declined. Really? Answer me this. Why would I get declined when not only are these cards for people with BAD CREDIT, but you have to actually put money down on them to get credit? For instance, I have to make a $300 deposit out of my own money to get a $300 credit limit, plus they charge a $39 fee plus the 22% interest. It’s absolutely NO risk to the bank but yet I get declined?? When I called the bank and asked they said that it’s because I have bad credit and I’m a risk. I have just started college. I am really enjoying it. Especially after being out of high school for 4 years. Anyhow, I am back into it and I have qualified for financial aid. It is an unsubsidized loan, with a total of a little over 6k. It is my first loan, and I intend to pay every bit of it. My employer reimburses up to $5,200 a year, which is more than enough to pay for a year’s tuition at my college branch. If my calculations are correct, I should receive an overage check of about 4k, which is the same amount I have left on my auto loan. I am being nailed on interest for the auto loan, which is 14.2 percent — I had no credit, no co-signer — so I had to bite the bullet of an extraordinary rate. So, I figure I will take the full amount of my award this once and pay off my auto loan. It will give me peace of mind because if I lose my job, I lose my car. But if I pay off the car, I can lose my job, but still keep going to school, for I do not have to pay back my loans until after I graduate. That way I can pay about $100 a month toward the overage check, paying it off well before I graduate. So, for the people that have had much experience with their finances, been through many hardships, tell me, is this a good idea? Am I thinking on the right track for a young age — 23?
