Edgar Berlanga Triumphs in His Return to the Ring

After a knockout drought that lasted for over a year, Edgar Berlanga came close to ending it in the final minute of his first fight since his extended hiatus. Despite his late surge and four knockdowns, Ireland’s Jason Quigley managed to survive until the bell, albeit suffering a lopsided defeat. Berlanga, going the distance for the fifth consecutive time, secured a resounding unanimous decision victory.

The judges’ scores of 116–108, 116–108, and 118–106 all favored Brooklyn’s own Edgar Berlanga in the super middleweight clash. Reflecting on his performance, Berlanga modestly rated his win as a “C,” despite the clear-cut victory. This latest triumph marked his third consecutive fight at the renowned venue, where he has garnered a significant following.

Saturday’s match marked Berlanga’s return to the ring after a ten-round victory over Alexis Angulo on June 11 of the previous year, also at Madison Square Garden. Following that fight, the undefeated Nuyorican found himself facing disciplinary action from the New York State Athletic Commission due to an attempted bite during the ESPN headliner. The commission handed down a six-month suspension, which kept Berlanga inactive for the remainder of 2022. Additionally, it proved to be his final fight under the Top Rank banner, concluding their more than three-year association.

Earlier this year, Berlanga and Top Rank decided to part ways, leading him to sign with Matchroom Boxing, under the guidance of promoter Eddie Hearn. This move opened a new chapter in Berlanga’s career, offering fresh opportunities for his development as he seeks to make his mark in the sport.

As Berlanga continues his journey in the ring, his fans eagerly anticipate witnessing more electrifying performances from the talented super middleweight.
