Labor Day

The celebration of Labor Day commemorates Americans working day in and day out and their well-earned achievements. The holiday falls on the first Monday of September, and represents the end of summer for some Americans, which calls for celebration.

The first Labor Day was in 1883, on behalf of the Central Labor Union; However, a law was signed in 1894, making it an official national holiday.

In the late 1800s, Americans found themselves laboring 12-hour days, seven-days a week. Even children as young as 5 years old were working. Dangerous working conditions were no help to these Americans, either.

Strikes and rallies began to breakout in order to protest low pay and poor working conditions. These protests led to an incredibly large march to Union Hall in New York City with over 10,000 workers. This was the first Labor Day Parade.

Since then, Labor day is celebrated every year by American citizens with parades, barbecues, picnics, fireworks, and more. Taking a break from work and spending time with family and friends is all in the spirit of Labor Day, but remember to commemorate and honor those who labor for the strength, freedom, independence of the United States of America.
