person of influence

I have two memories of writing in school. Scratch that, three. Two of them are of teacher’s giving me feedback and the other was of a student taking twenty of my dollars and not writing the essay I was promised. The kids these days would call that a dick move. The memory that was the most influential would be of my teacher talking about having a voice in your writing. One day she talked about how important it was to have a voice in writing. Something about having a unique voice in your writing was important. I remember that really resonating with me. I usually got C’s on my papers in that class and usually I didn’t give a shit. That is until I got a C on my next paper after that lesson. I looked at the feedback and saw that she marked me down for being too direct with the audience and writing like it was a one way conversation. I realized I had a distinct voice in my writing and was filled with joy.
