How many times do you check Instagram?

2 years ago my relations with digital was quiet manageable, phone was not the first thing I spent time on after waking up. I mean I had used it as an alarm-clock only but nothing else besides that. I was quiet motivated by everything that was going on with my life so I this device did not took a lot of my attention. It was like that until the hard period began in my life: I had a health problems, a lot of deadlines as was finishing the university, I felt apathy, but understood that it is not the right time for that (like if there is). I was trying to understand how in this circumstances to meet all the deadlines and successfully finish university. Then I remembered that my friend once mentioned that every morning it is hard for her to wake up and she checks Instagram to become awake. Then I thought that I can do the same and it will help me to distract my mind from other issues and get all the work done. Part of this distraction was also to watch the whole seasons of Friends tv-show.

Well, I must admit that this so-called degradation plan helped me to finish the university despite anything, but had some aftermaths on my life in general. Social media and especially Instagram made me demotivated, less inspired and addicted to the content and entertainment. It was a good way as distraction when I had a goal (getting a degree), but afterwards when the new goal is not there yet it just getting all of your energy of finding this goal. I do not think Instagram is a pure evil but to use it person should be really in a lot of control of himself.

My own experience and observation of how people communicate when there is digital made me to choose the problem of digital influence on people as my master thesis. As I was studying the Data Journalism I decided to create a handbook, which could help anyone to understand why digital devices are so addictive, why it takes a lot of will to resist them and which steps to take if you got into the situation when you are not longer in control of your life.
