Is the GPU replacing the CPU?

Nvidia has announced that it will soon be releasing its first system reference designs that are powered by the Nvidia Grace CPU.

Once it is released, Nvidia’s first CPU will help usher in the next generation of high-performance computing (HPC), which will enable tasks such as complex artificial intelligence, cloud gaming, and data analysis.

Both the soon-to-be-released Nvidia Grace CPU Superchip and the Nvidia Grace Hopper Superchip will make their way into server models produced by some of the most well-known manufacturers, such as Asus, Gigabyte, and QCT. These manufacturers will be among the first to incorporate these chips into their products. Chips manufactured by Nvidia will deliver new levels of performance to data centers, complementing x86 and other Arm-based server architectures. The central processing unit (CPU) as well as the graphics processing unit (GPU) were unveiled for the first time earlier this year, but more recent revelations have brought forward further data along with an estimated delivery date.

Although Nvidia is best recognized for producing some of the greatest graphics cards available, the Grace CPU Superchip has the ability to take on a wide variety of high-performance computing (HPC) activities. These jobs can range from difficult artificial intelligence to gaming in the cloud. Nvidia has hinted that the Grace Superchip would include two separate processing chips that will be linked together using the company’s proprietary NVLink-C2C connection technology.

Alongside the release of the Nvidia Grace, the company is also introducing the Nvidia Grace Hopper Superchip. Despite their apparently similar names, the “Hopper” moniker reveals that this product is more than simply a CPU. Nvidia Grace Hopper is a combination product that combines an Nvidia Hopper graphics card and an Nvidia Grace CPU. This product once again makes use of the NVLink-C2C technology.

When combined, the two have a profound impact on the rate at which data may be sent, increasing it to a level that is up to 15 times quicker than that of conventional CPUs. Both of these processors are amazing, but the combination of the Grace and the Grace Hopper should be able to take on virtually any challenge, including massively parallel AI programs.

The recently released Nvidia server design portfolio has single-baseboard systems that may be configured in up to four different ways. These designs are able to be further adjusted according to unique requirements in order to accommodate certain workloads. In this regard, Nvidia provides a short list of available systems.

The Grace Hopper Superchip and Nvidia’s BlueField-3 data processing units are included in the Nvidia HGX Grace Hopper system, which may be used for artificial intelligence training, inference, and high-performance computing (DPUs). In addition to that, there is a CPU-only option that combines the Grace CPU Superchip and the BlueField-3 hardware.

The Grace central processing unit (CPU), BlueField-3 memory, and Nvidia graphics processing units (GPUs) that have not yet been disclosed are included in Nvidia’s OVX systems, which are designed for digital twins and collaborative tasks.
