Cap and Trade

Around two hundred thousand tons of pollution is put into the atmosphere a day just in the United States. Ten percent of that is from auto transportation. Even though we already have some rules and regulations concerning the topic of pollution, there is still room for improvement. The United States Environmental Protection Agency currently has a certain quota (emission standards) for how much emissions a vehicle can produce before they leave that particular manufacturer. If a certain vehicle doesn’t meet their standard, then that vehicle cannot be sent to the dealership. Journalist and scientist, David C. Holzman, states in his article Driving Up the Cost of Clean Air, “Vehicle exhaust contributes to untold numbers of hospitalizations for asthma attacks and other health problems, while car-related pollution contributes to lung diseases, heart attacks and even death.” This is why any man-made pollutants should be regulated to keep the environment’s air around us as clean as possible. The purpose of the Cap and Trade Program is that they set a limit on emissions being put out in the atmosphere by putting a cap on greenhouse gases and let government corporations trade the emissions allowances among themselves because of the overall cap. The City News Service stated in their article L.A. Ranked Worst in Ozone Pollution Again, “Los Angeles, California (Long Beach metropolitan area) is one of the biggest places in the United States that have a layer of ozone over itself in the sky due to greenhouse gases and other emissions.” Long Beach has broken the record for worst pollution in nineteen out of the twenty years that they have produced annually by the State of the Air Report.

Even though any type of emissions are a bad thing, the things that produce these extra waste gases are a good thing. If it wasn’t for factories and auto transportation then nobody could live in today’s society comfortably at all. Auto transportation increases mobility, gives you more time in the day to do more and most vehicles nowadays have a ton of safety features to keep individuals secure and guarded. Factories produce products that are a necessity in today’s society. The more products there are to produce, the more jobs there are to fill with people.
