The issue of how to lead during The Great Resignation is perhaps at first best approached by considering how not to lead during this employer crisis. Three key actions to avoid are:
- cracking the whip about everyone returning to the office
- taking on more work than you have capacity for
- not listening to employee concerns.
If you insist on trying to wrestle back control, your employees will:
- speak negatively about you and the organisation
- go out sick, whether or not they are actually ill
- vote with their feet and find another job.
As a result you will:
- lose a great deal of tacit knowledge
- find it difficult to replace exceptional staff
- have an even lower capacity for business development
- be under tremendous pressure from your immediate boss
- go out sick in an attempt to restore your own shattered nerves
