There is no miracle in improving your life. Start with raising your standards.

Life can sometimes be a pain in the neck, and often we find ourselves in situations many would find imperfect, perhaps even problematic. Consequently we end in a loop, that repeating mantra; I need…

Tattooed and Oppressed

Nearly every person between the ages of, let’s say, eight and 80, had their parents tell them at some point growing up that getting visible tattoos would be damaging to their career aspirations. I myself am among that demographic. My father joined a small tech company (you may know it as Motorola) as a teenager and enjoyed a substantial head start to a career that would’ve made James Truslow Adams cum in his pants. My father was not necessarily anti-tattoo, but he scoffed at any indication that I could be successful with one, let alone multiple. I began to get tattooed right after I turned 18, and got a full sleeve done when I was 20. I was committed to rebellion, and I probably, at some point, wanted a “tattooed and employed” t-shirt. I’m so fucking glad I did not get one. Like Chive bumper stickers or I ❤ Boobies bracelets, wearing a “tattooed and employed” shirt labels you as an exclusive kind of asshole; one that’s so caught up in edgy martyrdom that they never stopped to think that *maybe* they don’t get hired at jobs because they just aren’t professional.

Right now I have 25 tattoos, and in two days from now it’ll be 26. Both arms, my chest, my legs, shit, even the side of my head. I work for a bank and I am recognized for the work I do just about every day. I make good (not great, but good) money, and probably could get a promotion when I decide to wear dress shirts every day instead of every third day. The phrase “dress for the job you want” is lost on me, seeing as how the “job I want” is one that lets me wear joggers and drink beer all day. I do not need to be reminded that I have tattoos, nor do I need to remind everyone else every day to realize and appreciate the job I have. I’m not alone, many of my coworkers and managers have visible tattoos.
